 Rick L. Wilson - Director of Music

 

Rick Wilson, a native Oregonian, has been a staff member of the Oregon City United Methodist Church since 1989. Wilson began his music studies in voice at an early age and sang with many ensembles throughout his childhood. Soon he became student prodigy under the famous organ virtuosi, George Butterfield and served as Organist at Airman Memorial Chapel at NAS Miramar in California at the age of 14.

Later, Wilson enrolled at the School of Creative and Performing Arts in San Diego, California where he studied music and theater. Active in performance, Wilson performed as soloist with the San Diego Opera, Pacific Chamber Opera, West Coast Lyric Opera and the prestigious Master Chorale. Wilson also studied with the late Tomas Nee as student conductor and organist with the La Jolla Chamber Orchestra. Active in the music performance community Wilson performed with such notables as Robert Shaw, Myron Tweed, Norman Boaz, Tito Chapobianco, Jansoug Kakhidze and Theo Alcantara.  He won many competitions in voice and organ including the Metropolitan Opera Auditions, the Edminston Organ Competition and the San Diego Classical Master Voice Auditions in which he won first-place, two years consecutively. He also became active as an actor in film with roles in "River's Edge", "Roustabout", and "Dudley's Revenge".

At 17, he returned to Oregon and served as Organist/Choir Director at St. John the Apostle Church in Oregon City and soon enrolled at Marylhurst University where he earned his BA and BM degrees in music and vocal performance studying with Nancy Olson-Chatalas. As a composer, his works have debuted at the American Choral Conductor's Association, Marylhurst and Portland State Universities as well as the American Guild of Organists.

Today, Wilson performs extensively throughout the Pacific Northwest and continues graduate music studies at Portland State University.
