FROM THE PASTOR…
I want to talk about children this week.
We had 71 children (plus youth and adult volunteers) at Kid's Night Out on Friday evening. Some of the kids have been here for just about every opportunity that we have offered for them in the past several years. Some children were here for the first time. All of the children got to experience Christ's love and genuine community at OCUMC.
I spoke to one mother who was picking up her three year old daughter and her three month old son, Ian. I had the privilege of being part of the team of people who cared for Ian and seven other toddlers in the Nursery. When I thanked the mother for bringing Ian, she told me that he is a foster child, as is her daughter. I was amazed. This woman has opened up her heart and home to a couple of beautiful children who needed a home. In a small way, we supported her Friday evening.
One of the things that I love about OCUMC is how children are welcomed here. Thank you to Christa Palmer, Laura McGraw and the entire team of people who make this kind of experience possible for our community!
Did you know that we are opening the church to welcome children this summer in cooperation with the YMCA? We are one of the host sites for the YMCA Summer Day Camps. Over the past several months, we have been working out the details with the YMCA and the State of Oregon to get all of the inspections and requirements fulfilled for licensing. We are not sure how it will work out, but we are going to give it a try this summer. If it is a blessing for the children, the YMCA and OCUMC, we may continue the relationship with the YMCA providing before and after school care next fall.
Yesterday the four-year-old class had a Luau and invited me. They made a Lei out of their hand-prints for me. We had fruit-kabobs, did the limbo and sang a song. What a blessing children are in our church!
This weekend, Kevin Yell will be bringing the message and leading worship for Memorial Day Weekend. We are beginning a new series, Seeds of Hope. It will be a great weekend of worship at OCUMC!
Many blessings and much love,
OCUMC Congregation: As you all know, our pastor, Gerry Hill is retiring on June 30th. To celebrate his ministry at OCUMC and his retirement, there will be a reception after church on June 30th. All are invited to join in wishing Gerry well as he pursues new adventures and opportunities.
CELEBRATING BAPTISM AND RECEIVING NEW MEMBERS - Sunday, June 2nd during the 10:00am service. If you are interested in baptism or becoming a member of the Oregon City United Methodist Church, please contact Pastor Gerry or the office.
OCUM Nursery - The Nursery needs to update their toys for the little ones. If you have any toddler toys that are in good condition please donate them to the nursery. Special requests: Guess Who, games, wooden puzzles, Do A Dot Art Markers. Please see Heather Cruikshank for any questions or donations.
“UNDIE SUNDAY” – Between now and June 2nd you can bring in your donations of new packages of underwear and socks. Donations will be delivered by Marian Olivas to the Annual Conference. Underwear of all sizes – of all types – for all ages – for both genders – diapers too!
KEEPING H.O.P.E. FULL – H.O.P.E. Sunday is June 2. Kids are getting out of school this month so they will be home for lunch. Families who turn to H.O.P.E. for help often find their food bills are higher in the summer because their children are home all day every day. Keep lunch and health snack foods in mind if you are shipping for H.O.P.E.
