FROM THE PASTOR…
I want to talk about children this week.
We had 71 children (plus youth and adult volunteers) at Kid's Night Out on Friday evening. Some of the kids have been here for just about every opportunity that we have offered for them in the past several years. Some children were here for the first time. All of the children got to experience Christ's love and genuine community at OCUMC.
I spoke to one mother who was picking up her three year old daughter and her three month old son, Ian. I had the privilege of being part of the team of people who cared for Ian and seven other toddlers in the Nursery. When I thanked the mother for bringing Ian, she told me that he is a foster child, as is her daughter. I was amazed. This woman has opened up her heart and home to a couple of beautiful children who needed a home. In a small way, we supported her Friday evening.
One of the things that I love about OCUMC is how children are welcomed here. Thank you to Christa Palmer, Laura McGraw and the entire team of people who make this kind of experience possible for our community!
Did you know that we are opening the church to welcome children this summer in cooperation with the YMCA? We are one of the host sites for the YMCA Summer Day Camps. Over the past several months, we have been working out the details with the YMCA and the State of Oregon to get all of the inspections and requirements fulfilled for licensing. We are not sure how it will work out, but we are going to give it a try this summer. If it is a blessing for the children, the YMCA and OCUMC, we may continue the relationship with the YMCA providing before and after school care next fall.
Yesterday the four-year-old class had a Luau and invited me. They made a Lei out of their hand-prints for me. We had fruit-kabobs, did the limbo and sang a song. What a blessing children are in our church!
This weekend, Kevin Yell will be bringing the message and leading worship for Memorial Day Weekend. We are beginning a new series, Seeds of Hope. It will be a great weekend of worship at OCUMC!
Many blessings and much love,
Gerry
